Getting Light Out

I read [wang_ultrahigh_2009] and am absolutely fascinated by the language they used to simple say: "We are trying to get more light out of laser".

I'm guessing that by having a capable FDTD optical simulation package as well as having access to a foundry and a photoluminescence (PL) set-up, I too can publish and be grandiloquent in my presentation of an ostensibly straightforward concept.
